Dupasquier Dinner – Weds 12 Jun 2013

We’re very pleased to present a dinner at Nicolas featuring the wines of Domaine Dupasquier. Noël, David and Véro are making some of our favourite wines – farming with little mechanical help on the slopes, picking each parcel by hand late into the season, and vinifying patiently in their traditional cellar. Nicolas Joanny has been a fan of the wines since the very beginning, and he is one of the few chefs we trust to do justice to these wines.

We will be staggering seating times for tables of 4-8; please let us know your preferred seating time and we will try our best to accommodate. E-mail (info@kotselections.com) or call us (+65 9789 5552) if you wish to make a reservation.

Nicolas, 10 Teck Lim Road, Singapore 088386

Jancis publishes our account of shipping fiasco

It’s with mixed feelings that that we direct you to our account of the shipping fiasco on Jancis Robinson’s website. We’re still sad that so many great wines were lost through a careless error, but pleased that we can use this incident to draw attention to the all-too-common mishandling of wine. We don’t tolerate such nonsense when it comes to other perishables, so why does wine continue to be so poorly treated?

As with cork taint and wine forgery, change will only come about when there’s sufficient consumer pressure. Do your part, and insist on proper handling and storage from all your wine suppliers.

In the press – Laherte Frères

Eric Asimov of the New York Times writes about the Laherte Frères Les Vignes d’Autrefois from the 2006 vintage, which is big-boned, broad-shouldered champagne (article). We sold out of that a long time ago and are now on the 2007 vintage, which is sleeker and more focused. Several other snippets:

1. Amusingly, it’s one of the few times where the New York retail price is higher than what you can purchase the wine for in Singapore. Our cost structure, including local taxes, mean that it’s usually impossible to match prices in Europe and often the US except for very expensive wines.

2. The Champenois knew what they were doing when they planted Pinot Meunier in some of the sunniest spots (not necessarily with the best mix of chalk and clay).

3. Pinot Gris is indeed not listed as one of the permitted varieties in the INAO document for champagne, although I come across it more often than Petit Meslier or Arban(n)e in the vineyards. My suspicion is also that there is some Auxerrois lurking under the guise of pinot blanc in the Aube; only Pinot Blanc vrai (true Pinot Blanc) is allowed.

4. Given the fruit-forward characteristics of Pinot Meunier, I often wonder if a rosé might not be a more interesting expression than a normal white champagne. There’s of course Laherte’s ‘Les Beaudiers’, but there are many other Pinot Meunier rosés which are fascinating as well.

Part travelogue, part socio-political analysis, we think “Floating on a Malayan Breeze” is the perfect accompaniment to North Indian chaat and the indie wines we’ll be pouring. More seriously, the reading is on Wednesday, 12 December, from 6-8pm. You can find out more and reserve spaces via the AmCham website.

A Sorry Tale – A Special Sale

A Sorry Tale – A Special Sale

Some of you might know that we had a heat-affected shipment in May, when close to 5,000 bottles were loaded into an unrefrigerated container, despite our very clear instructions. After six months of legal wrangling, we’re relieved to have almost closed this chapter, with just one issue to be resolved: what to do with the wines?

The typical outcome in such scenarios is the ‘dumping’ of the wines onto the market without any regard for the reputations of the winegrowers. To prevent that, we have repurchased the wines at significant cost, and affixed caveat stickers over the front labels of every bottle to indicate their provenance.

As the shipping conditions did not meet our standards, we will be offering the affected bottles for sale at a 50% discount until the end of the year. We intend to destroy any remaining wines after the sale period.

There is unfortunately no way of telling beforehand how a bottle might have been affected. We have tasted extensively from this shipment, with a large and expected amount of variability – some bottles are obviously ‘cooked’, while others just show a bit more open and forward than pristine bottles.

We thank all of you and the sommeliers who have stood by us over the past six months, and wish everyone a happy, hopefully wine-filled festive season.

2010 J-P. Brun Beaujolais L’Ancien

With a perfect round of St-Marcellin and some sourdough, a handy reminder that acidity comes in many forms, undergirds the complex and delicious flavours of food, and is integral to balance.

This bottling is also a clear triumph of intensity over concentration. Try a bottle soon.
